POWER IN SPORTS: Tiger Woods
Professional Golfer
By: Nicole Bruno
Tiger Woods may be a household name in golf, but it is the heart and soul of the man behind the Nike clubs that deserves the most recognition. Tiger’s love for golf started at a very early age. "When Tiger was 6 months old, he would sit in our garage, watching me hit balls into a net. He had been assimilating his golf swing,” explained his late father, Earl Woods. “When he got out of the high chair, he had a golf swing." With a childhood spent dedicated to golf, Tiger had a clear path to his future.

It wasn’t soon before the whole world knew of Tiger’s incredible golfing abilities and at the age of 21, Tiger won his first Masters Tournament- making him the youngest person ever to do so. By the age of 24, he had won both the US Open and British Open, which put him into the same company as famous golfers, Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus. One of the main characteristics that set him apart from other golfers is that he truly plays for the love of the game. “If money titles meant anything, I'd play more tournaments. The only thing that means a lot to me is winning,” says Tiger.  Since the start of his professional career, he has won 90 tournaments, 70 of which were PGA tournaments. He has worked hard for the victories and appreciates them above all other rewards.

Fast forward to 2009, Tiger Woods, now 33, has spent many years using his popularity to help inspire others. “If you are given a chance to be a role model, I think you should always take it because you can influence a person's life in a positive light, and that's what I want to do. That's what it's all about,” says Tiger. In 1996, with the help and inspiration of his father, The Tiger Woods Foundation was created and has helped over 10 million children in the world through scholarships, grants, junior golf teams, character development. He also started the Tiger Woods Learning Center, in Anaheim, CA, which provides students with an environment that stresses the importance of education and shows them that personal interests can help develop amazing careers. Along with his personal efforts, Woods has also teamed up with AT&T and Chevron to put on tournaments that benefit his foundation. Woods values the importance of helping younger generations succeed.  “The only thing I can do is try to give back,” says Woods.

With a thriving professional and personal life, many would agree that Tiger Wood’s accomplishments are well deserved.  His life has been guided through his inspirations, which he owes to his parents and Nelson Mandela. Now he seeks further inspiration everyday from his wife and two young children. He continues to play each round of golf with a goal of being better than he was the day before. Although a top leader, he still has his ups and downs, and learns from his experiences. "He came out into this golf world under a tremendous amount of expectation and pressure and performed. He has performed at the highest level every single time he's come out. He's proved himself human, where he can make a double bogey, like everybody else can, and he'll recover from that. And I think he wants to win. And winning is his objective every time he turns out,” says longtime friend and golf legend Jack
