"A LEGEND OF YESTERDAY & TODAY"
An Exclusive Interview With DAME ELIZABETH TAYLOR
By: Mimi Makabi
MM: You have been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, and were made a Dame of the British Empire in the year 2000. What was that like and what does this mean to you?
DT: “The most exciting—and I do not exaggerate… day in my life.”
MM: What is something you would you like the people to know about you that they don’t already know? (something fun and interesting)
DT: “I feel very adventurous. There are so many doors to be opened, and I’m not afraid to look behind them. Recently, I did get into a shark cage. At one point, there were twelve sharks cruising the cage!”
MM: For many years your health has been under public scrutiny and has made great tabloid headlines. What do you make of all of this?
DT: “I give too much—out of a lust for life. I never back away. I relish life and face it dead-on. Sometimes it's almost more than I can face. But I try to stay wide open to whatever happens. Ready to face any experience and go forward. In my life, I have never, God knows, done anything by half measures. I have never thought we should avoid what life dishes out to us. I believe people are formed by the weather. We're formed by experience, by heartache, by grief, by mistakes, by guilt, by shame—all the things that psychiatrists would like to take off our shoulders. But how do you become a fully-fledged human being without taking the brunt head on? I'm glad in my life I have never cut short my emotions.”
MM: What do you hope to be able to say about your life, when you look back one day and reflect? What do you consider to be your true legacy by which people will remember you by?
DT: “Using my fame for AIDS. Honestly, I would give my life to defeat AIDS.”
Conclusion: Dame Elizabeth Taylor—The Living Legend of “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow!”
