POWER IN FILm/ENTERTAINMENT: Robert Redford
Actor, Film Director, Producer, Businessman, and Founder of The Sundance Film Festival
By: Andrew Fiouzi
Named after his character the Sundance Kid, in 1980, Redford established the Sundance Film Institute—a non-profit organization built to assist aspiring filmmakers and theater artists in developing their talent. Located in Park City, UT, near where he had maintained a home since the early ‘60s, Redford soon expanded the institute’s influence to the Utah/U.S. Film Festival, which was transformed into the Sundance Film Festival in 1985 and became one of the leading film events for independent filmmakers in America. “Sundance was started as a mechanism for the discovery of new voices and new talent,” explains Redford. "About 35,000 to 40,000 people inflate the town in a 10-day period, and that brings a lot of money to the retailers, the restaurants... which goes back to the state in the form of taxes."

Robert Redford will always be thought of as a heartthrob, an arts activist, and a renaissance man, all rolled into one. Ultimately, it is Robert Redford’s sheer enthusiasm, passion for film, and his dedication to social awareness that make him a leading man both on and off screen.

"I have a very low regard for cynics. I think it's the beginning of dying."— Robert Redford
