investments in for-profit companies involved in solving social problems. It recently announced a $4.4 trillion plan to collaborate with other Fortune 500 corporations to wean the U.S. off fossil fuels by 2030. Despite the colossal cost of the plan, the Google Foundation estimates that it could save approximately $1 trillion while creating new jobs over the next twenty years.
Separately, Sergey Brin has started his own grant-making charity. Since his mother, Eugenia, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, the Brin Foundation has made enormous grants to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the University of Maryland School of Medicine which has established the Eugenia Brin Professorship in Neuroscience Research. Also, in August of this year, the Parkinson’s Institute and Clinical Care Center (PI) announced the receipt of a $3 million challenge grant from the Brin Foundation as the lead gift in PI’s $15 million capital campaign – “A Campaign to Conquer Parkinson’s Disease.” Irwin Helford, Board Chairman of PI and retired Vice Chairman of Office Depot, expressed his delight at learning of the gift: “It’s heartening to see a leader of the new generation of successful entrepreneurs is taking up the banner of promising research philanthropy. Anne and Sergey have set the bar at a high level. I hope that other leaders, who care about ending this terrible disease, will follow their example.”
